A Brand New Yarn
We are in the middle of creating our latest yarn range called DEVONIA. It is a beautiful blend of 3 local breeds - 50% Exmoor Blueface / 30% Devon Bluefaced Leicester / 20% Devon Wensleydale. The Exmoor Blueface is our local sheep and brings its wonderful springy nature, the Bluefaced Leicester lends its outstandingly soft handle and lustre to the yarn, whilst the Wensleydale adds its qualities of a beautiful golden sheen and fineness of fibre.
The 10 initial shades are inspired by the colour palette developed by Jean Lurcat, the French artist noted for his role in the revival of contemporary tapestry throughout the rst half of the 19th century. We visited a breath-taking exhibition of his work in the Spring of 2016 at his chateau in south-central France.
We are currently in the midst of sampling yarn colours – each spun from a selected blend of pre-dyed and natural white tops, giving a beautifully deep and rich, yet subtly mottled hue within each shade.
It is being lovingly spun at our Mill, under the watchful eye of John, into both a DK (approx 250m per 100g) and light 4ply / fingering weight (approx 400m per 100g). Whilst a series of patterns to support the yarn are also in development.
A wonderfully exciting new British yarn to be launched in early 2017 ... DEVONIA will be an elegantly sumptuous yarn created and spun in North Devon from a captivatingly versatile blend of local breeds.
