Lidden Gloves - by Aleks Byrd

Inspired by the geometric shapes of decorative brickwork and carving through England and Scandinavia, these gloves tell a story of traveling and movement. Lidden is the Devonian word for story and these gloves have a lot to say with traveling stitches, braids and two coloured rib.

MC: Mizzle; 200 m / 220 yds, 50 g

CC: Bell Heather; 40 m / 44 yds, 10g

Needles: 2.25 mm DPNs

Notions: Waste Yarn Tapestry Needle Stitch Marker

Gauge: 15 sts x 19 rnds = 5 cm / 2” Measured over Stockinette stitch

Finished Measurements: S, M, L
Cuff circumference: 17,18.5, 20.5 cm / 6.75, 7.25, 8” Palm circumference: 20, 22, 23.5 cm / 8, 8.5, 9.25”

Pattern Notes: These gloves feature a cuff made of 2 colour corrugated rib and vikkel lateral braids followed by a traveling stitch pattern called a vikkel in Estonian. The traveling stitches create peaks with a stripe that extended upthe middle to the finger.

The glove is knit in the round from the cuffup with stitches divided for the fingers.

The thumb is created by knitting select stitches in waste yarn in a contrasting colour. These are then picked up once themain part of the glove and other fingers arecomplete. Additional stitches are picked up either side of the thumb to close gaps.

Fingers and thumbs can be elongated to knitter’s preference.

John Arbon Textiles & Fibre Harvest - British makers of yarns and fibres

Welcome to John Arbon Textiles' website, every page adorned with our luxury Yarns & Fibre Tops, a fine array of woolly wonders.

Nestled in the heart of North Devon, our Mill is one of only a handful of small-scale, specialist worsted processing & spinning Mills still operating in the UK. Full of refurbished machinery John has rescued over the years, with some newer additions along the way, the Mill is where we create, develop and make all our Yarn & Fibre Tops ranges. The new Mill arrival, Italian cone winder (Gino) has settled in splendidly, whilst Gillian the skeiner (one of our oldest machines at over 100 years of age) has had a re-vamp & is running smoother than ever.

Some of our ranges are... Knit by Numbers (100% organically farmed Merino in over 100 gradient shades), Exmoor Sock (our newest addition), Exmoor Zwartbles 4ply & DK (wonderfully woolly & hardwearing), Harvest Hues (bouncy with deep, rich shades), and Devonia (brimming with drape and lustre). Many of these glorious ranges are made using sheep reared and sheared on our doorstep in Devon, as it is important to John to incorporate local & rare breed fleeces wherever possible.

This last year has been a rollercoaster of woolly excitement - we passed the sock side of our business onto Kim Kearney (Arbon Socks) in order to focus wholeheartedly on producing our specialist Yarn & Tops. Our South Molton Mill folk, led enthusiastically by John, are Helena, Jack, Phil, Tash & Frankie (who's come back to the fold proper) - a fantastic team of woolly magicians. Generous amounts of backup comes from Juliet & Sonja (an invaluable new addition) based at our Lynton shop & office, which steadfast assistance from Judi & Ginette.

2019 sees our 5th Mill Open Weekend & Sale on 8th & 9th June, whilst we look forward to attending shows such as Unravel, Edinburgh Yarn Festival, Wonderwool, Woolfest, Fibre East & Yarndale.

Thanks to all our loyal customers for your warm wholehearted support & encouragement. We couldn't do it without you.

All the best indeed

John & Juliet
