Virtual MOW Classes & Talks
We have planned an exciting schedule of free classes and talks for our Virtual MOW (9th & 10th July). You’ll find a little info on each of them below. We do hope you’ll be able to join us! All sessions will be hosted on Zoom, you can grab a ticket via our Eventbrite page. Free Solo – Launch Party with Melanie Berg!
Saturday – 1:30pm to 2:30pm (BST)
Grab you party hats and join Melanie Berg and everyone at JAT in celebrating the launch of the stunning new jumper design, Free Solo, created by Melanie in our very own Harvest Hues. Melanie will talk about her creative process and design development, and we will have some stunning kits put together especially for this event!
Local Colour: Dyeing with foraged plants with Julia Billings
Saturday – 3pm to 5pm (BST)
Making use of nature in her creations is central to Julia Billings of Woollenflower’s practice as a botanical dyer and in this lecture, Julia will share her extensive knowledge on the topic with us. Why not learn how to put those garden weeds to good use and create stunning hues from dandelion, nettle or bramble?
Top tips for beginner spinners with Amanda Hannaford
Saturday – 5pm to 6pm (BST)
Well known in the spinning world as a fountain of fibre knowledge, Amanda Hannaford is joining us with two lectures on spinning techniques. The first lecture takes place on Saturday giving those just starting out on their spinning adventure a great base from which to expand their fibre craft from whilst Sunday’s lecture will focus on advanced techniques giving the experienced spinners and curious beginners plenty of exciting content.
Virtual Show and Tell
Saturday 6.30pm to 8pm (BST)
Back by popular demand! Our online Show and Tell session proved incredibly popular for last year’ s virtual event and we are really looking forward to seeing what you have all been making over the last year. Wear your favourite FO (finished object), show us your WIP (work in progress) and maybe even some UFOs (un-finished object) if you want to!
Creative Visible Mending with Sarah Elwick
Sunday – 11am to 12pm (BST)
The newest trend in textiles embraces environmental awareness, mindfulness and creativity in one colourful craft; visible mending. Join Sarah Elwick, a university lecturer and seriously skilful crafter, on a walk through inspirational visible mends both by herself and others, and a look at some creative visible mending techniques.
Design your own Pick & Mix Cowl with Kari-Helene Rane
Sunday 12.30pm to 13.30pm (BST)
Brewed by the Mill Folk is a range of yarn dyed in unique colours created especially for the virtual Open Weekend by our lovely crew! Using these colours, Kari-Helene has created the Pick & Mix Cowl. Join us as we chat through Kari-Helene’s design idea and the fun way she has made you a part of the design process.
Contemporary Crochet with Fay Dashper-Hughes
Sunday – 2pm to 3pm (BST)
Crochet has often been seen as the old fashioned and outdated fibre craft, but Fay Dashper-Hughes is on a mission to change this! In her talk “Contemporary Crochet – pushing beyond the granny square” Fay will guide us through a selection of modern and beautiful crochet and bust a few dated crochet myths in the process.
Mill Q&A with Helena and Laura
Sunday – 4pm to 5pm (BST)
Have you been introduced to Chapman, Cuthbert or Ralph? They are key members of the John Arbon team, but you may find the conversation a little lacking should you join them over a cuppa. They are machines (all the machines at the mill have names!) and we love and care for them dearly. Join Helena and Laura as they answer any questions you may have on the mill, our machines or the yarn making process.
