Meet the Mill Folk — Martha

Martha works in our Production Finishing Team on the Mill Mezzanine (‘mezz team’ for short!) where all the yarn gets plied, skeined, coned and stored. She also does our mill tours and makes appearances at some yarn shows too!

How would you describe your job?
I would describe it as a fluffy colourful crazy world on this mezz, where we skein and cone rainbows everyday!

Why did you decide to work at the Mill?
I started out as an intern straight out of uni. I never knew you could do a job like this so when I heard I could do a creative hands on job I jumped at the chance. I found yarn fascinating on my textiles course and think it’s pretty cool that I now help to make it.

Any pets?
Sadly not but I do drop hints to my boyfriend everyday how great a little kitty or doggie would be in our little house, fingers crossed for one day…

Why do you like working at John Arbon?
There is too much to love about this place from all the fluff, to the machines and their quirks as well as the best group of people to work with!

What is your favourite machine and why?
I’d probs have to say Boyd, he can be a pain with all his quirks but I do love him. It wouldn’t be the same without his loud hum in the Mill. He can be very mesmerizing as well as the yarn winds through to the spinning bobbins.

What’s your favourite smell at the Mill?
The smell of freshly toasted teacakes that always seem to drift up onto the top mezz from the staff room. Donna and Helena are usually the culprits.

What’s your favourite season in North Devon?
Summer for definite, I thrive in the sunshine.
