Zarauz Tee by Esti Juango | Annual (issue 5) Pattern Previews

When we first launched our Call for Submissions for the Annual (issue five), themed “Seaside Kitsch”, we were so curious which ideas were going to land in our inbox! We were dreaming of beach huts, vintage scenes, rainy days, seaside fairgrounds and ice creams on the pier – and oh blimey, did you deliver! The Annual (issue five) is filled to the brim with seaside goodness – think ice cream-coloured shawls for those days that go from hot to cold in an instant, mitts and a hat to keep you warm during a blustery walk, cute little seaside critters, and last, but very certainly not least, our new go-to summer tee!

Meet: The Zarauz Tee by Esti Juango

The Zarauz Tee by Esti Juango is the perfect garment for casual summer days on the beach. It’s delightfully playful with its drop shoulder and sideways garter-stitch construction, and it looks great in multi-coloured stripes or a single-colour stripe against a neutral tone.

It works great in both Sport and DK weight yarns, and so we whipped up three different samples to show you the multitudes of ways you can play with colour in the Zarauz Tee:

For the Annual (issue five), we thought it’d be fun to introduce you to our designers and patterns one by one, and ask them a few questions about the inspiration behind the design, what they liked about the yarn they worked with, and their favourite beach memory. Without further ado – meet Esti Juango, the designer of the Zarauz Tee!

Hi Esti! Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Let’s start with the idea of your submission for the Annual (issue five):

What’s the main inspiration behind your Zarauz Tee?

This T-shirt is inspired by the beach of Zarauz, a beautiful village on the Basque coast of the Atlantic Sea. Its striped huts decorate the already beautiful beach surrounded by mountains. Those beautiful beach huts are the icing on the cake and one of my absolute favourite bits of the beach, plus the inspiration for this design, of course.

What’s your favorite element of the design?

What I like about the T-shirt is the double play of the change of colour and the change of stitch between stockinette stitch and garter stitch, which gives texture to the garment and infinite possibilities of combination while knitting it from one side to the other.

What makes Yarnadelic Sport and your Zarauz Tee such a great combination?

I love the way Yarnadelic Sport behaves after blocking, as if each stitch moulds perfectly to the texture with which it has been worked.

What’s your favorite beach memory?

More than a memory, I am left with a sensation of summer smells, summer light, sand and memories with families on days when there is no rush and enjoyment is maximised.

Thank you so much, Esti, for taking the time to answer our questions! You can find more about Esti over on her website, Ravelry and Instagram.

The Annual (issue five) will be available for preorder on August 8. Keep your eyes peeled on the blog for more pattern intros, and on our newsletter for the preorder release!
