We now offer handy kits for all our patterns in The Annual (issue five)! This is the delightful Woolacombe Waffle Hat by Helena Timms, inspired by wild seas, pebble beaches, and, of course, ice cream cones.

All kits include enough yarn to knit the hat, along with a limited edition button badge and a fab project bag to keep it all safe. Please be aware that the kit does not include a copy of The Annual – you can get your copy here. Happy knitting!

Who doesn’t love an icecream at the seaside? Helena Timms’ Woolacombe Waffle Hat is designed with a slip stitch diamond waffle pattern over a simple garter stitch background to mimic the classic waffle cone. Choose your favourite ice cream colours to add a pompom!

The Woolacombe Waffle Hat works great in DK and Aran weight yarns. We created a range of different samples to show you how it knits up in Knit by Numbers DK, Devonia DK and Appledore Aran:

Samples

  • Version 1 (Multi-Colour Pompom): Devonia DK in Sandbar (MC) and Burnished Bronze/Devonia Cream/Broken Flower (CC)
  • Version 2 (One Colour): Appledore Aran in Quench (MC)
  • Version 3 (Stripes): Knit by Numbers DK in KBN113 (MC), KBN115 (CC1) and KBN08 (CC2)

Designed to be worn with about 10cm / 4” negati ve ease around the brim.

Gauge:  

  • DK: 21 sts x 42 rnds = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4″ (in garter stitch and slip stitch pattern, on larger needles or needle size to obtain gauge, after blocking)
  • Aran: 19 sts x 38 rnds = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4″ (in garter stitch and slip stitch pattern, on larger needles or needle size to obtain gauge, after blocking)

Suggested needle size:

  • DK: 3.5 mm / US 4 and 3.75 mm / US 5
  • Aran: 4 mm / US 6 and 4.5 mm / US 7
