Kit Shade

The Boyd Hat is designed by Sonja Bargielowska for our Annual (issue one). Please note that the kit does not include the pattern. You can purchase the Annual (issue one) that includes the pattern here.

As part of the festivities surrounding the launch of the digital versions of The Annual, our in-house magazine, we decided to do a little throwback party by selecting one pattern from each Annual and putting together a kit for it!

The Boyd Hat is a delightful colourwork hat designed by our very own Sonja for the very first issue of The Annual. It features a folded or single brim (your pick!), a stunning, almost Art Nouveau-esque bit of colourwork, and fun bobbles and a pompom in a splash of colour.

We've had a lot of fun putting together new colour combinations for it – and while one of the original yarns we used for the cinnamon-brown sample (Viola) is discontinued, we've added an option for Devonia DK in colours that comes pretty close!

Yarn Characteristics

Devon Naturals 4ply: Our Devon Naturals range is a curated selection of our local wool in undyed gradient shades. We offer two blends: One consisting of Exmoor Blueface and Zwartbles, and the second one of Grey Exmoor Blueface and Romney. The Zwartbles/Exmoor Blueface is super bouncy and robust, and the Grey Exmoor Blueface/Romney is softer and more lustrous.

Individual Blends (Zwartbles / Exmoor Blueface or Grey Exmoor Blueface / Romney)

400m per 100g | 100m per 25g minis

Knit by Numbers DK: Knit by Numbers is inspired by the much-loved paint-by-numbers kits of our childhoods. With a colour palette of over 100 different shades it’s created by blending pre-dyed fibre tops with specific percentages of white, resulting in six tonal gradient shades per colour. The blend of Bluefaced Leicester and Merino is next-to-the-skin soft with great stitch definition and just the right amount of shine.

50% Bluefaced Leicester / 50% Falklands Merino

233m per 100g | 58m per 25g minis

Devonia DK: Devonia is rather special to us as it’s the first blend we created using exclusively local West Country fibre. It combines Exmoor Blueface, Bluefaced Leicester and Romney, resulting in a springy yarn with a soft handle and fine drape.

50% Exmoor Blueface / 30% Bluefaced Leicester / 20% Romney

233m per 100g | 58m per 25g mini

Appledore DK: Sourced from right here in the West Country, our Appledore blend encompasses our ethos of making local, uniquely heathered yarns. Packed full of woolly bounce and a smattering of lustre, it’s the perfect canvas for a range of playful shades. It’s our most durable yarn – great for hardwearing garments and accessories.

40% Devon Closewool / 40% Romney / 20% Exmoor Blueface

Care Instructions

We recommend that our yarns are gently washed before use as we don't do any washing or conditioning after the yarns are spun and skeined. You'll be amazed by how much the fibre blooms after a soak and it will certainly help you get a more accurate feel for gauge and character of the yarn over time.

If using hand dyed yarn then this step is not necessary, but you may wish to stripe your skeins for colour consistency.

Once your piece is finished, we recommend another hand wash before wet blocking the piece to the given dimensions. This will set all your stitches and guarantee that your garment looks its best.

Learn more about caring for your yarn on our blog.
