The Kemmick Shawl was designed by Anna Husemann for our Annual (issue three). Please note that the kit does not include the pattern. You can purchase the Annual (issue three) that includes the pattern here.
Designed by Anna Husemann, the Kemmick Shawl is a modern garter and intarsia knitting pattern with two colour palettes inspired by the landscape of Exmoor and the seascape of the north-Devon coastline. This pattern looks like a beautiful aerial view of the fields around Exmoor, so we called it ‘Kemmick’ which means Flax Field, which we thought would be perfect for a textile interpretation of fields!
Knitted from corner to corner, this colourful scarf of abstract interlocking shapes is perfectly paired with our Knit by Numbers DK mini skeins.

The Kemmick Shawl is knitted sideways in garter stitch with increases and decreases occurring every fourth row. There is a black and white chart which details all the colour placement, so you may wish to colour it in

Knit by Numbers DK:
Knit by Numbers is inspired by the much-loved paint-by-numbers kits of our childhoods. With a colour palette of over 100 different shades it’s created by blending pre-dyed fibre tops with specific percentages of white, resulting in six tonal gradient shades per colour. The blend of Bluefaced Leicester and Merino is next-to-the-skin soft with great stitch definition and just the right amount of shine.
50% Bluefaced Leicester / 50% Falklands Merino
233m per 100g | 58m per 25g minis
Appledore DK:
Sourced from right here in the West Country, our Appledore blend encompasses our ethos of making local, uniquely heathered yarns. Packed full of woolly bounce and a smattering of lustre, it’s the perfect canvas for a range of playful shades. It’s our most durable yarn – great for hardwearing garments and accessories.
40% Devon Closewool / 40% Romney / 20% Exmoor Blueface
250m per 100g | 62m per 25g mini
Devonia DK:
Devonia is rather special to us as it’s the first blend we created using exclusively local West Country fibre. It combines Exmoor Blueface, Bluefaced Leicester and Romney, resulting in a springy yarn with a soft handle and fine drape.
50% Exmoor Blueface / 30% Bluefaced Leicester / 20% Romney
233m per 100g | 58m per 25g mini
Care Instructions
Care Instructions
We recommend that our yarns are gently washed before use as we don’t do any washing or conditioning after the yarns are spun and skeined. You’ll be amazed by how much the fibre blooms after a soak and it will certainly help you get a more accurate feel for gauge and character of the yarn over time.
Once your piece is finished, we recommend another hand wash before wet blocking the piece to the given dimensions. This will set all your stitches and guarantee that your garment looks its best.

Local Fibre
Our mill is situated in the heart of North Devon. As much as possible we use the fibre which is reared and sheared on this land, utilising the unique properties of each breed in our yarn and tops.

Unique Yarn & Tops
The hours of work and skill that go into producing one of our yarn and tops ranges is reflected in the dedication of a knitter, spinner or crocheter during the intricate journey from beginning to finished garment – both are a harmony of tradition and creativity.

Vintage Machines
Our Mill is one of only a handful of small-scale worsted spinning mills still operating in the UK. Many of our vintage machines were rescued from old, traditional mills before their closure. Keeping them going is a labour of love, but we reckon that the resulting woolly treats are well worth it!
