We now offer handy kits for all our patterns in The Annual (issue five)! This is the gorgeous La Baule Shawl by Natalie Chautemps – the perfect accessory for those moments when you need a little something to keep you warm on a long beach day.

All kits include enough yarn to knit the shawl, along with a limited edition button badge and a fab project bag to keep it all safe. Please be aware that the kit does not include a copy of The Annual – you can get your copy here. Happy knitting!

Natalie Chautemps’ La Baule Shawl is inspired by the French seaside resort of the same name. Situated in northwest France, it owes its fame to its very own beach which, at 9km long, is one of the longest in Europe.

Natalie combined playful garter stitch stripes with a soothing moss stitch texture reminiscent of sand – both guaranteed to make for delightful knitting and wearing! Plus: A fantastic chance to pick your favourite colours from one of our DK yarns – we used both the punchy bright colours of Knit by Numbers DK as well as the muted heathered tones of Appledore DK to show you how it can look like in different combinations.

Yarn Characteristics

Knit by Numbers DK: Knit by Numbers is inspired by the much-loved paint-by-numbers kits of our childhoods. With a colour palette of over 100 different shades it’s created by blending pre-dyed fibre tops with specific percentages of white, resulting in six tonal gradient shades per colour. The blend of Bluefaced Leicester and Merino is next-to-the-skin soft with great stitch definition and just the right amount of shine.

50% Bluefaced Leicester / 50% Falklands Merino

233m per 100g | 58m per 25g minis

Appledore DK: Sourced from right here in the West Country, our Appledore blend encompasses our ethos of making local, uniquely heathered yarns. Packed full of woolly bounce and a smattering of lustre, it’s the perfect canvas for a range of playful shades. It’s our most durable yarn – great for hardwearing garments and accessories.

40% Devon Closewool / 40% Romney / 20% Exmoor Blueface

250m per 100g | 62m per 25g mini

Care Instructions

We recommend that our yarns are gently washed before use as we don’t do any washing or conditioning after the yarns are spun and skeined. You’ll be amazed by how much the fibre blooms after a soak and it will certainly help you get a more accurate feel for gauge and character of the yarn over time.

Once your piece is finished, we recommend another hand wash before wet blocking the piece to the given dimensions. This will set all your stitches and guarantee that your garment looks its best.
