Find Your Perfect Gradient

With our new Knit by Numbers Gradient Packs hitting the website this week, we thought we’d give you some gradient knitting pattern inspiration, so that you can use your favourite fade in your own glorious ombre project.
So you’ve spied a beautiful project, the maker has created the perfect ombre effect, fading from dark to light, the colours blend perfectly, and it’s immensely impressive! But perhaps pairing all those different shades together seamlessly seems like a rather daunting task…
Our Knit by Numbers range is kind of unique in that we’ve already created a perfect gradient for you, by blending a pre-dyed fibre top colour with specific varying percentages of white. This means that each of our 19 colour families in Knit by Numbers starts off in its most saturated, bright form. Then we add more and more white fibre to the blend, which gives us 5 more tones, creating a beautiful 6 colour gradient from dark to light. That’s how we get our 115 shades!
As a special treat, we’ve put together Knit by Numbers Gradient Packs, in 4ply, DK, and minis, so you’re ready to put your gradient to work in your project.
To spark some inspiration, we’ve put together our favourite projects and patterns that utilise a fade or a gradient…
Andrea Mowry, otherwise known as Drea Renee Knits is surely the Queen of Fades with her many shawls and sweater patterns that beautifully blend and marl colours together. We love the ‘So Faded’ Sweater (Ravelry – DreaReneeKnits) and the possibilities at play in the ‘Find Your Fade Shawl’ (Ravelry – DreaReneeKnits).
Stephen West is a designer who also expertly plays with fades and gradients in his patterns. We think his ‘Faded Undulation’ Shawl (Ravelry – Westknits) would look fab in a full gradient set of Knit by Numbers.
The Tin Can Knits ‘Bounce Blanket’ (Ravelry – Tin Can Knits) is a pattern that uses geometric simplicity in such a creative way. We love the wave-like texture and can imagine a Teal KBN Gradient Set might look particularly fetching!
The ‘Summer Sorrel’ tee by Wool and Pine (Ravelry – Wool and Pine) is another firm favourite, that uses a faded effect in their sample. Knit by Numbers is a 50% Falklands Merino, 50% BFL blend, so buttery soft and smooth next to skin, and breathable enough to wear throughout the year, even for summer projects.
The ‘Fading Point’ wrap by Joji Locatelli (Ravelry) uses 5 skeins of 4ply yarn to create her gorgeous rectangle shawl. Pick your favourite Knit by Numbers full gradient set and you’ll be on your way.
If you want to use a Knit by Numbers mini-skein set, then the ‘Alaska’ Hat by Camille Descoteaux (Ravelry) creates a stunning effect with just a small amount of yarn. Fancy another mini-skein project? The Faded Beanie by Savannah Owens (Ravelry) uses 6 mini skeins to create this beautifully simple effect – a perfect bit of TV-knitting if you ask us!
We hope these beauties have given you a wee bit of inspiration, but we can’t wait to see what you folks create with our Knit by Numbers Gradient Kits. Here’s where you’ll find them all.
