Meet: The Woolacombe Waffle Hat by Helena Timms

Who doesn’t love an icecream at the seaside? Helena Timms’ Woolacombe Waffle Hat is designed with a slip stitch diamond waffle pattern over a simple garter stitch background to mimic the classic waffle cone. Choose your favourite icecream colours to add a pompom!

This pattern works great in DK and Aran weight yarns. We created a range of different samples to show you how the Woolacombe Waffle Hat knits up in Knit by Numbers DK, Devonia DK and Appledore Aran:

For the Annual (issue five), we thought it’d be fun to introduce you to our designers and patterns one by one, and ask them a few questions about the inspiration behind the design, what they liked about the yarn they worked with, and their favourite beach memory. Without further ado – meet Helena Timms, the designer of the Woolacombe Waffle Hat!

Hi Helena! Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Let’s start with the idea of your submission for the Annual (issue five):

What’s the main inspiration behind your Woolacombe Waffle Hat?

Who doesn’t love icecream? Living by the seaside in Lynton we often get a waffle cone when we’re wandering around town, and it really is the quintessential holiday treat for all ages!

What’s your favourite element of the design?

I really liked this dropped slip stitch over garter stitch pattern as it is cosy but a bit more interesting than your usual options such as cables or ribbing. I do of course always love a giant pompom on a hat too, so getting to make icecream scoop inspired ones was probably the most fun part of the design process!

What makes Appledore Aran, Devonia DK, Knit by Numbers DK and your Woolacombe Waffle Hat such a great combination?

Both Appledore and Devonia are hardy British wool yarns that are perfect for keeping the coastal chill off in the winter, with 3ply structure that gives the stitches nice definition. And the Knit by Numbers was perfect as it has so many colour choices to choose your perfect flavours/colours from and is nice and soft for those that prefer that, or are knitting for children.

What’s your favourite beach memory?

My 3 year old nephew loves to come visit us and go to the beach to throw stones in the sea, followed by seeing just how much chocolate icecream a toddler can get on everything in a short space of time…

Thank you so much, Helena, for taking the time to answer our questions! You can find more about Helena over on Ravelry.

The Annual (issue five) will be available for preorder mid August. Keep your eyes peeled on the blog for more pattern intros, and on our newsletter for the preorder release!
