What's in a Blend? Fibre Characteristics of Sheep Breeds with Sonja & Helena of JAT
This talk is part of our Mill Open Weekend celebrations.
Here at the mill, the majority of the yarn and tops we produce are made using fibre from ten different sheep breeds. We chose these sheep specifically because the fibre from each one possesses slightly different qualities. This variety allows us to create a range of different products to suit all your crafting needs.
If you’ve ever been curious about the difference between hill sheep, downland breeds and longwools or Zwartbles, Exmoor Blueface, Romney and all those other breeds you see listed on our labels then now is your opportunity! Join Sonja and Helena as they walk you through all of our favourite sheep breeds with hands on samples of the fibre in various forms to help you visualise these differences. They will also touch upon the processes involved in making a yarn, from selecting a fibre blend all the way through to finishing.
We will have time for a Q&A session at the end, so you'll be able to pick their brains if you fancy.

Local Fibre
Our mill is situated in the heart of North Devon. As much as possible we use the fibre which is reared and sheared on this land, utilising the unique properties of each breed in our yarn and tops.
Unique Yarn & Tops
The hours of work and skill that go into producing one of our yarn and tops ranges is reflected in the dedication of a knitter, spinner or crocheter during the intricate journey from beginning to finished garment – both are a harmony of tradition and creativity.
Vintage Machines
Our Mill is one of only a handful of small-scale worsted spinning mills still operating in the UK. Many of our vintage machines were rescued from old, traditional mills before their closure. Keeping them going is a labour of love, but we reckon that the resulting woolly treats are well worth it!
