The Story of Mineralogy, this year’s MOW special!

When we set out to create this year’s MOW special, we knew we wanted something even extra special for this year – and what better way to do that than to involve all of you lovelies in the process? So we made you Honorary Mill Folk, and proceeded to ask you oodles of questions over the course of a few months to arrive at Mineralogy, our 2025 MOW special.

First, you picked a blend and general colour feel for the special.

Then, you selected your favourite colour palette and submitted lots and lots of theme ideas!

After that, you chose one more colour to add to the palette and voted for “Geology and Minerals” as the MOW special theme.

And last, but very certainly not least, you named all of the seven gorgeous Mineralogy shades!

Now, with the launch of Mineralogy just around the corner, we’d love to dive a little deeper into the yarn and tops we created together with you.

Yarn

Back in January, you chose Corriedale as the main fibre for this year’s MOW. No surprise as it’s gorgeously soft and bouncy – and you can make pretty much anything with it! You then went for Grey Exmoor Blueface as the second fibre, also soft, and really lustrous. Lastly, you added a dash of Romney which gives the blend some yummy drape! The resulting yarn is buttery soft with a gentle handle and warm, woolly character.

We wanted to accentuate this softness and decided to spin Mineralogy as a 2-fold, i.e. twisting two single strands of yarn together. This gives it a subtle stitch definition and delicate halo. When we first saw it on our needles, and then knitted up in our samples, we really loved how well it works for gentle cables (like Sonja’s Saltings Sweater), texture and colourwork! (You can check out our whole range of pattern samples for which we’ll have kits available here.)

The colour palette you Honorary Mill Folk picked is so well-rounded, we think there’s something in there for everyone! From a subtle, heathered, pearly white-grey – Alabaster – to a warm, earthy coral – Carnelian, from a punchy teal – Malachite Magic – to a soothing navy – Blue Slate – we’re pretty sure you’ll find a shade (or two, or three) you’ll love.

All of these, alongside kits for our sample patterns, will be available on July 5th at 10am BST.

Tops

Now, you didn’t think we’d forget the tops, did you? As much as we love the gentle 2-fold spin of Mineralogy, there’s just something about the tops that makes our heart sing. You chose heathered shades, and so we decided to blend these tops a little less than we do some of our others. This means they will be more heathered than, say, Yarnadelic or Harvest Hues, and are great for experimenting with spin techniques!

The blend of Corriedale, Grey Exmoor Blueface and Romney drafts like a dream – wonderful for spindles and wheels alike.

Our Mineralogy tops will also hit the shop shelves on July 5th at 10am BST.

We absolutely loved getting to create this super special MOW special together with you. Thank you so much for answering all our surveys, submitting theme ideas and colourway names, and following along on this journey! Now onto the next chapter: Getting it onto our wheels and needles!
